There’s more than one iconic Dale Earnhardt paint scheme that longtime NASCAR fans will never forget.
But perfect for the Bojangles’ Southern 500 in September, Richard Childress Racing drivers Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman will pay tribute to the late, legendary driver with blue and yellow paint schemes similar to the one Earnhardt had for his first Southern 500 win 30 years ago.
Although Earnhardt won his first Southern 500 in 1987, he had won at Darlington three times prior to that fall race and accumulated a total of 10 wins at the South Carolina track throughout his career.
Dillon now pilots the No. 3 car that Earnhardt started driving in 1984 for Richard Childress Racing. The 27-year-old driver – also Childress’ grandson – brought it back to Victory Lane at the Coca-Cola 600 in May for the first time since Earnhardt’s last win in 2000.
This isn’t the first time Earnhardt’s iconic No. 3 Wrangler has been duplicated. His son, Dale Jr., won in a similar-looking car in the XFINITY Series’ Subway Jalapeño 250 in 2010.
